Introduction

Motivation: Need for clarity

There is a need for strategic clarity i.e. what is the core objective(s), how are we pursuing that. Yes, we want a wiser, weller world. But what exactly do we mean by that, and what are we doing towards that in the near term e.g. next 3-5 years – given our small size and capacity etc.

Take the Bergerac hub as an example. Consider questions like:

  • Who exactly are we seeking to come? Is it, for example:
    • a) people generally interested in second renaissance or ‘this stuff’
    • b) People who are potential second renaissance pioneers, i.e. people for whom a big chunk of professional and/or personal activity is devoted to mission of cultivating a radically wiser world
    • c) People who are potential Life Itself pioneers, i.e. people doing the above in close relationship with or as part of Life Itself?
    • d) Something else …
  • Ditto: What is the intention of what happens here?
  • What tone and feel do we use when we communicate? Is it Advaya like? Dark Mountain like? Rebel Wisdom like? Plum Village like etc?

Or consider our old Brand Narrative and Brief 2020 - Life Itself. Again, really great and … it is often too high level to guide actual decision-making. Take some examples from it:

Our ambition: A world that is wise, well and awake.

Yes 👍 … and more specificity is needed. The Second Renaissance already refines this to an extent. And we need something lower level.

Why we are here: Being changes everything. Spearhead a waking up, growing up, cleaning up culture. Make politics cool again to address collective challenges. These are key steps to a wiser, weller world for all beings.

True and … what does that actually mean. ‘Spearhead a waking up, growing up, cleaning up culture.’ Are we a monastery, a course, an alternative business or something else entirely …

What and How: We build a better, wiser future, now, through culture. We do this via spaces, a culture and a community – by pioneering our own and by allying with others to transform wider society.

Ditto. We aren’t that much clearer. Are we a better WeWork, a conscious SoHo house? What culture exactly etc.

3 levels of ambition / why we’re here

Preamble: one of the major advances of the last three years is in distinguishing different levels of our strategy. Roughly, we can distinguish three levels, described here in terms of “Our ambition” or “Why we’re here”:

[Top] Level 1: A second renaissance happens ⇒ seed a second renaissance

Level 2: Self-sustaining pockets come into existence and form a movement ⇒ pioneer pockets

[Ground] Level 3: Growing set of people, projects and some proto-pockets pioneering a second renaissance

Whilst we share the vision at each level, the top level is more general and more distant, making it less useful for making specific choices near-term about offers or brand. Hence …

Ground level is our focus in terms of clarity

The ground level is what we need to focus on, at least in terms of clarifying what we are up to with e.g. the Hub and our main communications material. For the higher level, we have the Second Renaissance initiative, which focuses on developing the higher-level vision and theory of change, and on movement-building around it.

The ‘who’ is what matters

The big vision remains the same: a second renaissance, a new cultural paradigm of interconnectedness, wisdom and inner growth. As does the related strategy: start by creating a growing network of pockets pioneering a second renaissance.

The key question is how to ‘niche’ down in the near-term. How to speak to a particular audience, to establish the ‘tribe’. We are a ‘tribe offering’: what we offer, at its core, is not a thing like a car or an experience like a retreat, rather it is belonging with purpose, hope, meaningful contribution and rigorous action. People choose to connect with us, our programs and materials because it is what ‘people like them’ do.

Thus, our biggest need has been to identify the audience. From that much else can flow ..

Who and what …

Who are we here for?

People who want to transition their lives and their societies … towards a new paradigm of interconnectedness, wisdom, and inner growth [aka a second renaissance] and who are looking to commit to practical action.

[Longer] We are here for the pioneers of a radically wiser world our hearts know is possible, people who want to come together and take action. People who are practical and down to earth, creative and connected who understand the need to be pragmatic to fulfill our dreams and aspirations. They know the path is hard and has pitfalls and yet they also know it is possible. They are eager to learn, they want to develop and have already started on this journey. They want to go to the next level of depth and action both in their own lives and their communities, practically transitioning their own lives and their societies.

Notes: distinctions with visionary of the new paradigm. Eg: McGilchrist, is an brilliant philosopher but not a pioneer because not boots on the ground (?), he is a visionary though he does not have a very specific vision for the next paradigm [there is the general ‘more right brain’ but that is very general. Thus, he hints at elements of it but not a vision. In this regard, he is more Hegel than Marx].

We think that if your vision is not grounded in practical experience, there will be issues (blindspots). E.g. Karl Marx had a wonderful theoretical vision of societal change and yet the horrors of applied communism partially came from Marx’s lack of practical experience in implementing his vision – which would surely have tempered his certainty. We think that 2R/ Metamodernism / the next paradigm can also be vulnerable to this type of blindspot, if it is solely based on intellectual insight and not grounded in experience. This is why our group sees the necessity to do both at the same time. (Especially as we see that western culture is particularly vulnerable to this blindspot, being a culture which may at times over emphasize the importance of the intellect and mind – the idea over the reality)

What challenge do we exist to respond to?

Pioneering can be hard. The path is not always clear. We will often struggle to go it alone. We need to act collectively without losing autonomy and responsibility and we (broad we) don’t know how to do that very well (yet).

The integrations that are needed are really hard in practice. E.g. autonomy and collective. Theory and practice. Inner presence and outer action. No-one knows how to do that. We need to rigorously explore how we can do this better …

What do we offer / provide … What do we do and how do we do it?

We offer a gathering place and incubator for people and projects committed to pioneering a second renaissance (in all its synonyms).

We nourish and foster pockets (mini ecosystem of a 2R) by incubating 2R type initiatives both internally and externally eg: sense making studio, 2R, DDS, PBM + Bergerac hub.

Specifically:

  • Path-find / Sensemaking: We do sensemaking and research to find pathways towards radically wiser futures, including the practical steps from the old paradigms to the new [personally and collectively] and which includes hospicing and composting modernity. For example, we share the 2R vision, the DDS vision and our learnings (from artworks, to ecosystem mapping, to reports and social media, research group)

  • Gather: Being a place for pioneers to connect with each other and creating a 2R pocket ourselves. (e.g.: the Bergerac + PBM hub, 2R connection calls)

  • Explore: a place to develop projects, experiment with practices. For example, we apply and experiment with our findings, through our residencies, PBM+ Bergerac hub and other initiatives.

All of the above are grounded in Praxis: integrating theory and practice. And walking the path ourselves = embodied knowledge.

What is Life Itself?

At the core of Life Itself we are a ‘Kibbuddhist’ collective seeking to ‘walk the talk’, an actual second renaissance ‘pocket’ helping to pioneer a second renaissance.

Specifically, We develop inner-led community spaces, projects, and enterprises oriented towards seeding and catalysing a paradigmatic shift towards a radically wiser future – a “Second Renaissance”, such as … sense making studio, Second Renaissance initiative, Developmental Spaces, Farmhouse and Riverside Hubs.

Why are we here

What is our ambition?

More people, projects and pockets pioneering a second renaissance (whether using that name or not). Dozens in every country. Networking together. A proto-movement …

We want to be a group, where people are thinking, “Hey, I want to see and live in a metamodern / 2R future, who do I go to to learn and actually do that? You should go to LI”

Why do we exist? Why are we here?

We exist because we see a gap: there are many people and groups making sense of the new paradigm and who write, think about it ( eg: John Vervaeke, metamodern, Schmactenberger, Perspectiva, Dark Mountain, the Stoa…) but few who are committed to take practical steps and actions to make this new paradigm come to reality. There is a gap between our ideal, our understanding of where we would like to go and our practical ability and know-how to actually embody and implement this change. We want to be the pioneer of this new paradigm and for that we know we must be practical, rigorous, patient and dedicated. Very few spaces and groups come together to specifically work on the spiral of: learning, experimenting, failing, iterating and repeating again. This is the spirit of the pioneers, and pioneers need one another and specific spaces ( physical or online, e.g. project) to activate their energies. We see that this energy is vital for any greater movement and this new reality to emerge.

An example of this gap in general: There are no teal communities that we know of or that people tell us about when they ask us. Why are there no active, super-impactful integral coliving groups (or at least that are well known about and an inspiration)? How could we support closing this gap?

What makes us different?

  • (Theory + Practice) x iteration = developing embodied knowledge

  • Idealism (holding a vision bigger than oneself) + pragmatism ( grounded on what is actually going to work)

  • Weaving the personal and collective

What do we value the most? (This will be baked into 1 and 2)

What’s our personality?

Pioneers: very practical and very idealist ( the kibbudtz pioneers were both taken by a real idealism yet also extremely practical to make this dream come true, same for making Taiwan a democracy without huge bloodshed, they had to hold the democratic ideal while dealing with the social, economical, political local and internal reality, they did that incrementally )

If LI was a person, what would they be like? (This will be baked into 1 and 2)

A practical idealist, someone who is intense (high level of passion + dedication = devotion), not concerned for convention and takes it into consideration. Someone who cares about beauty and truth ( wants to look at things deeply) and is devoted to both transforming themselves and the world.

Life Itself as Kibbuddhist

Life Itself as an organization: is itself a Second Renaissance organization with a “Kibbuddhist approach” meaning it has a more collective model i.e. living together (part of the year), creation of enterprises with a portion revenue supporting LI, and an emphasis on cultivating inner capacities.

That is, Life Itself specifically take on creating pocket(s) of a 2nd Renaissance. There is a thriving LI Kibuddhist neighborhood and virtually and physically connected to other 2R initiatives, where pioneers live; practice, work and share material goods and revenue together to fulfill on the 2R vision.

Second Renaissance Vision

Second Renaissance is a movement and a larger network with a theory of change and people involved may or may not be part of Life itself, they can have their take on implementing the 2nd Renaissance ( or parts of it). There are 2R initiatives, organizations and pockets all over the world, taking concrete actions and projects to make the 2R vision and theory of change into reality.

Initiatives: What is Life Itself up to?

We develop a series of projects and initiatives to create pockets (mini-ecosystem) of the Second Renaissance that are viable both culturally (psycho-dynamically) and economically:

  • We develop space for people to experiment the implementation of practices and sense making through residency at the Hub (Hub, Valerie, Liam?)

Art of Second Renaissance

We are forming an Art collective, we come together virtually and in person to make art, exhibitions, publications, curations of the Art 2nd Renaissance. There is a new sense of what art is, and the role of the artist. We are reconnected to the sacred, spiritual, interbeing and the earth. Art, ritual, healing, spirituality and politics alchemise together.

How do the different projects fit together?

Hub

The Hub is related to the inner + coco in the way that it is a physical space where people get to practice the inner dimension and conscious community. It is also related to the sence making studio as there are also residency with a certain topical focus of sense making. Finally it also is related to the kibuddhist path as it is a test / entry point.

Sensemaking

The discovery of the sense making interact with the hub and inner dimension practice as they inform each other.

After doing all the planning in Strategy Review Summer 2024, there is still the question of what is our primary objective? For example, which of these three is primary:

  1. Build the Kibbuddhtz aka find more Life Itself pioneers
  2. Build the 2R community and create more pioneers and pockets of a 2R (and which of those is a priority)
  3. [non-objective!] Allow people to manifest what workstreams they want as long as they have some 2R connection and are Life Itself branded / owned (in some way)

Or, alternatively put:

  • Does Life Itself operate in a more focused way on a particular objective or is it more like a collective operating around a general theme e.g. the second renaissance? (Aside: In this latter case you could say the focus is cultivating that collective …)
